So I have this roommate…
Well, without going into too much detail, it is this man’s mission in life to never allow a light to be on one second longer than absolutely necessary. I am not exaggerating.
(side note: I DESPISE when people say “over-exaggerating”…. its exaggerating… not over exaggerating… get literate!)
Anyway back to my roommate… I honestly believe that Edison probably invented the light bulb about 6 months earlier but we never knew it because my roommate kept running around turning it off before Edison even noticed it was on. He is that good. For the last month or so I have left a light on in my room almost ever day. Every day, I come home, the light is out. Sometimes I think it turns itself off just to save him the trouble. I once was sitting in my room reading a book (yes it might shock some of you to know that I do in fact read) and this brainiac reaches in and turns off my light. I am in my room! USING THAT LIGHT! This is how much of a zealot this guy is. I mean if Hitler had a thing against light bulbs being on, he would have taken notes from my roommate.
Anyway… you might ask, what is the big deal? Its just a light… Well apparently its the principle of the matter. That light being left on is wasting money. A while back my other roomies got together and figured out that it cost an extra ten bucks a month to leave all the lights in the house on 24 hours a day. 10 bucks.. total… for the whole house.. so my one light… probably less than a buck a month extra. Anyway that’s not the point… its the principle of the matter right? Right.
Yesterday, this roomie complained that it was too cold in the house and had us turn the heat up. Yep, the same guy. Now, for those of you who don’t know, heating costs are expected to rise by about 50% this winter. That’s right, 50%. So… if you leave a light on, God himself might strike you down for being a bad steward of your money, but if you are too lazy to put a sweatshirt on while you’re in the house and want the heat turned up.. well by golly its a human rights issue. I am thinking about pointing out the fact that really one of the byproducts of me leaving my light on is that it heats the air around it. So you see, its not that I am trying to tick anyone off by leaving my light on, its that I am trying to do my part by keeping that section of my room warmer so we have more heat to go around the rest of the house… Want to take bets on who is the first to complain about the heating bill?
